Still No Orange Paw

Plump Vif D'Etampes from my garden

I can't believe it's already time to start sowing pumpkins and squash. My dutiful husband has already tilled the pumpkin patch twice (I've been busy working and the weeds are faster than me). Still debating whether to use that plastic tarp or use leaves for weed control, but the soil mounds will be formed and filled with seeds by the end of the weekend!

In the meantime, I have one pumpkin left from LAST year's harvest. Maybe it will be sacrificed to another batch of Pumpkin Sweet Potato Soup...

Pumpkin Sweet Potato Soup (adapted from Gluten-Free Girl's cookbook, Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef)

5 lb sugar pumpkin (I used the Vif d'Etampes)
1 small-medium sweet potato, peeled and diced
1 large carrot, diced
1 onion, diced
1 leek, white part only, sliced
5 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 bay leaf
2 qt chicken stock
2 tb butter
1/2 cup almond milk (optional - tastes great without it, as well)
lots of freshly cracked pepper and sea salt

Cut pumpkin into quarters and drizzle with olive oil, season well with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper; bake in a 450F oven for 30 minutes.

Add carrot, onion, leek and sweet potato to a large pot. Sauté with a liberal drizzle of olive oil and more sea salt and pepper. Add garlic; sauté just until fragrant. Scoop pumpkin meat from rinds and add to pot with chicken stock, nutmeg and bay leaf. Cook until vegetables are tender, 15-20 minutes. Purée with immersion blender and stir in butter and almond milk (if desired) to finish.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of this cookbook -- it's GF-friendly, but written from a perspective of a chef's eye and a foodie's cravings. This book is actually half love story, half cookbook - 100% food. There's a Northwest appeal to the recipes within this book that makes you want to immediately head for a farmer's market.

He's been eating chocky bunnies. We were at Walmart the week after Easter...while we were there, they made an announcement that they were selling Easter chocolate for 10 cents per item. We thought maybe that applied to a few items and went looking for the chocolate. Turns out they had tables of chocolate bunnies, various sizes and brands. And yes, they were all 10 cents each. Donnie picked up 10 boxes. I was reading the ingredient list on a bunny when a significantly overweight woman and her obese child blocked me against a table and almost crushed me. I kept politely saying "Excuse me" to get through but they both ignored me and just shoved me, grabbing bunnies as fast as they could. I finally got jostled away from the tables by them. Donnie, meanwhile, bought his 10 bunnies, then went back in for another 10 (or so).
